What is wrong with this "proof" that 1 = 0? z = 1. 1 = 1 x 1. So, z x z = z z(z-1) = 0 z = 0. But... z = 1!!! So, 0 = 1?

Since z = 1, z - 1 is 0. after, z(z-1) = 0, I divided by z - 1 (0) on both sides. And you cannot divide by 0.
