= 100 10000 \frac{100}{10000}

= 1 % 1\%

You can't multiply apples!

30 a p p l e s 30 a p p l e s 900 a p p l e s 30 apples * 30 apples \neq 900 apples

30 a p p l e s 30 a p p l e s = 900 a p p l e s ² 30 apples * 30 apples = 900 apples²

A percentage isn't a variable you can assign a value to, rather it is a fraction out of 100 100 . e.g. 52 52 % = 52 100 = \frac{52}{100}

To take your example. If we had 300 300 apples, 10 10 % would be 30 30 apples but 10 10 % 10 * 10 % would be 3 3 apples.

To further explain this, the percentage sign is used to denote a fraction of a number ( 10 10 % = 10 100 = \frac{10}{100} for example). Every percentage in an equation must first be simplified down to one percentage in order to properly calculate the result.

In the form of a general equation:

a a % b * b % of n n = a b 100 = \frac{ab}{100} % of n n

1 % = 1 100 1\%=\frac{1}{100}

10 % × 10 % 10\%\times 10\%

= ( 10 % ) 2 =(10\%)^2

= 100 × 1 100 2 =100\times\frac{1}{100}^2

= 1 100 =\frac{1}{100}

= 1 % =1\%

Probabilities can be written as decimals, percentages, and fractions. If 10% is written out as a decimal it's 0.1. 0.1 x 0.1=0.01. This changed back into a percentage is 1%.
