A percentage isn't a variable you can assign a value to, rather it is a fraction out of 1 0 0 . e.g. 5 2 % = 1 0 0 5 2
To take your example. If we had 3 0 0 apples, 1 0 % would be 3 0 apples but 1 0 % ∗ 1 0 % would be 3 apples.
To further explain this, the percentage sign is used to denote a fraction of a number ( 1 0 % = 1 0 0 1 0 for example). Every percentage in an equation must first be simplified down to one percentage in order to properly calculate the result.
In the form of a general equation:
a % ∗ b % of n = 1 0 0 a b % of n
1 0 % × 1 0 % = 1 0 % 2 = . 1 2 = 0 . 0 1 = 1 %
10% = 0.1 And therefore 0.1^2 = 0.01= 1%
1 % = 1 0 0 1
1 0 % × 1 0 %
= ( 1 0 % ) 2
= 1 0 0 × 1 0 0 1 2
= 1 0 0 1

Probabilities can be written as decimals, percentages, and fractions. If 10% is written out as a decimal it's 0.1. 0.1 x 0.1=0.01. This changed back into a percentage is 1%.
