This question can be tricky due to the wording. If a number is 34 less than 56, then it is equal to 5 6 − 3 4 . It is not equal to 3 4 − 5 6 , in which some students are tempted to replace "less than" with a minus sign.
Hence, the answer is 5 6 − 3 4 = 2 2 .
