Algebra Level 3

In 3 boxes, there are a total of 48 apples.
First, from the first box to the second box, we move as many apples as there are in the second box.
Second, from the second box to the third box, we move as many apples as there are in the third box.
Third, from the third box to the first box, we move as many apples as there are in the first box.
Finally, we observe that there are an equal number of apples in each box.

How many apples were in the first box at the start?
