mono means one, so equation with one term is known as monomial.

A monomial is an expression in algebra that contains one term, like 4xy. Monomials include: numbers, whole numbers and variables that are multiplied together, and variables that are multiplied together. A polynomial is a sum of monomials where each monomial is called a term.

An algebraic term is called a monomial if the sum has just one term, a binomial if there are just two terms, and a trinomial if there are just three terms.
