A Car Accident

Logic Level 1

A car had just knocked down a pedestrian. You a policeman, needs to know the car's license plate number. However, the CCTV nearest to the scene was turned off when it happened. So you decided to interrogate 5 witnesses at the scene.

Witness 1. The sum of the first three numbers on the license plate is 14
Witness 2. The first and last numbers are the same
Witness 3. The value of the first number is the second number subtracting the third numbers
Witness 4. The sum of the fourth and last numbers is 1 more than the second number
Witness 5. The first number is 3

The license plate has only 5 numbers on it. What does the car's license plate says?

The answer is 37453.

Witness 5 gives a good hint already. Since the first number is 3, then the sum of the second and third numbers is 11, according to Witness 1. Since Witness 3 says that that the value of the first number is equal to the difference of the second and third numbers, the only values for the second and third numbers are 7 and 4 respectively. According to Witness 2, the last number is also 3. So following what Witness 4 has said, 7+1 = Fourth number+3. Therefore, the fourth number is 5 and the answer is 37453

I had the answer of 34723, due to me thinking that it was the third number minus the second number.

By the words of Witnesses #5 & #2, our suspect drove in a car with a license plate number of :
3 _ _ _ 3

Let's substitute the blanks with unknowns for easier handling. Now it should be 3XYZ3.

Witness 1 : 3 + X + Y = 14
==> X + Y = 14 - 3 = 11

Witness 3 : | X - Y | = 3
==> X - Y = ± 3

Witness 4 : X + 1 = Z + 3
==> X = Z + 3 - 1 = Z + 2

Combining information from Witnesses #1 & #3 by the operation of addition, we get :
2X = 11 ± 3 ==> 2X = 14 or 8
==> X = 7 or 4
Answer : (X,Y) = (7,4) or (4,7)

Z = X - 2 ==> Z = 5 or 2

Final answer : We have two possible answers here.

37453 or 34723
