By mass, what percentage (to 1 decimal place) of carbon disulfide ( CS 2 \text{CS}_{ 2 } ) is carbon?

The answer is 15.8.

Mass of carbon disulfide = 32 + 32 + 12 32+32+12 = 76 76

12 ÷ 76 12\div 76 = 0.157 0.157

0.158 100 % 0.158*100\% = 15.7 % \boxed{15.7\%}

Isn't the molecular mass of carbon (approximately) 12?

Good point, it is. It's fixed now. My brain must have been thinking of Oxygen for some reason haha.

Woah Calvin you know something about chemistry? :O What else are you good at?

Nice that the correct answer is 15.8 (better than 15.7).

If we increase the precision you used:

(12.0107 u) / (12.0107 u + 2 * 32.065 u) = 0.157743

Also, 12 / 72 = 0.16666... != 0.157. Right?

And... With all due respect, check you sum "(32 + 32 + 12)". @Thomas Jones
