A classical mechanics problem by Vivek Mohan

When we ride on bicycle and paddle it to make it going. What is direction of friction force acting on front and rear tire consecutively?

In forward direction on front tire; in backward direction on rear tire In forward direction on both tire In backward direction on both tire In backward direction on front tire; in forward direction on rear tire

(As we are powering cycle by paddling it so in this situation solution is in following way) Consider motion of rear tire individually As we paddle cycle it results in rotation of rear tire first so revolves and goes back (relatively)in contact with ground so being acted by friction in forward direction. but front tire is connected to rest of bicycle at middle (center) and being pushed forward as cycle advances because of rear tire movement. so it's relative movement in forward direction in contact with ground makes friction to be acted in backward direction.

Friction force always act oppsite to the direction of motion & the cycle is moving forward. So, the friction force will act backward on the tires.

yup your first statement is correct but not second one. as I have said both tires are tending to move in opposite direction so direction of friction also differs. rear tire is driven by chain so tend to go backward while in contact with ground so offered friction by ground in forward direction . while front wheel only tend to move forward due to motion imparted by ground in form of friction to rear wheel, so it is being acted by friction in backward direction.

your ans would be correct when cycle is either rolling down on steepy terrain itself without no paddling.
