Well, in two parts of the model, you can see that the rope goes under and over the same section of rope. Any amount of twisting will not get it to untangle.

I belive it is just a trefoil knot. If you imagine pulling it apart, you would find that it gets stuck and could knot. If you are still not convinced, try using a rubber band to do the reverse of the question, and you will find it impossible.
