The battery produces energy from chemical reactions inside of the the different sections within the battery. Cooling a chemical reaction, depending on the type a.k.a. not in all occasions, will slow the reaction time down a considerable amount. This is a similar case to putting an already broken glow-stick in a refrigerator, the glow-stick lasts at least a few more hours than it would before.
