- There are only 3 chairs so two persons have to stand behind;
- The mother is to occupy the central chair and
- Either both the daughters are to sit in the chair or both of them are to stand behind.

Consider the mother must sit we are left with 2 daughters and 2 sons. Though, there are 2 possibilities: the daughters sit or don't. For each possibility, there are 2 ways to arrange the daughters and 2 for the sons. Hence 4+4 = 8.
