In how many ways can a family consisting of a mother, two sons and two daughters be arranged for a photograph satisfying the following conditions

  1. There are only 3 chairs so two persons have to stand behind;
  2. The mother is to occupy the central chair and
  3. Either both the daughters are to sit in the chair or both of them are to stand behind.

Consider the mother must sit we are left with 2 daughters and 2 sons. Though, there are 2 possibilities: the daughters sit or don't. For each possibility, there are 2 ways to arrange the daughters and 2 for the sons. Hence 4+4 = 8.
