A fishy suspect

Logic Level 2

A precious vase was stolen from the museum and the police found 5 suspects: Andrew, Beth, Carly, Daniel and Edward. The following statements are in the order that they were given (Andrew was the first to give her statement, Edward the second, etc):

  • Andrew : I didn't steal the vase.

  • Edward : Carly is lying!

  • Beth : It was Daniel.

  • Daniel : Andrew is lying!

  • Carly : Beth stole the vase.

The police found something fishy on these statements and immediately arrested the fishy suspect. Who stole the vase?

Beth Carly Daniel Andrew Edward

The statements in the list are in the order they were given. Notice that Carly was the last person to give her statement, but Edward said that she was lying before she spoke! It is fishy enough to say that he is the culprit.

It seems ambiguous to me. Couldn't it just as well be Beth by that reasoning? I figured that the questionable nature of Edward's statement indicated that Carly was going to tell the truth and that Edward was covering for Beth.
