Check out this animation:

At one point, a blue and white checkerboard pattern is magnified. At that point, what is the linear magnification factor? i.e. By how much do the squares grow linearly in size?

Please provide your answer to three decimal places.

If you watch the complete animation, the edges of the sides later become the diagonals. Therefore they must increase by a factor of 1.414 \boxed{1.414}
