Three men decide go to a restaurant and each get a 10 dollar sandwich. Their total price is 30 dollars. They give the 30 dollars to the waitress. The owner sees the three men and decides to take 5 dollars off their meal. The waitress takes the 5 dollars and angry since they did not give her a tip, she takes 2 dollars for herself. She then gives 3 dollars back to the three men. If they only ended up paying 27 dollars for their meal and the waitress pocketed 2 dollars, (which adds up to 29 dollars) where is the extra dollar?

$25 paid. $2 to waitress.
$25+$2=$27
Now, do not add the waitress' amount AGAIN like it suggests to, as this gives $29 total. Simply add the $3 that was returned to the men, to the running total ($27), and you are left with $30, the full amount.
