The man and 5 other people make up the first 6 in the elevator and they all want to exit on the first floor. (1 + 5 = 6)

On the first stop (7th floor), they pick up 3 people which brings the total up to 9 and now 7 want to exit on the first floor. (6 + 3 = 9)

On the second stop (4th floor), 2 people leave bringing the total down to 7, who all want to exit on the first floor. (9 - 2 = 7)

One the final stop (1st floor), the 7 people leave and then 6 more come in, leaving you with a final total of 6. (7 - 7 + 6 = 6)
