Fifty minutes ago if it was four times as many minutes past three o'clock as it is now to six o'clock. How many minutes is it to six o'clock?


The answer is 26.

from 3:00 to 6:00 you have 3 hours = 180 minutes

If you call x the minutes to 6:00, you have that now the minutes past 3:00 are ( 180 − x ) (180 - x) .

So the minutes past 3:00 50 minutes ago are:

180 − ( x + 50 ) = 4 x ⇒ 5 x = 130 ⇒ x = 26 180 - (x + 50) = 4x \Rightarrow 5x = 130 \Rightarrow x = 26

Let it be x minutes to 6. The time before 50 minutes = 3 hr + 4x minutes minutes.

6 hr – x minutes – 50 minutes = 3 hr + 4x minutes

3 hr – 50 minutes = 5x minutes

180 min – 50 min = 5x min.

5x = 130 min. so x = 26 minutes to 6 o' clock
