A classical mechanics problem by sid leo

A bent tube is lowered into A water stream as shown in Figure......the velocity of de stream Relative to the tube is v=2.5 m/s.......The closed upper end Of tube is located at a height h0=12 cm has a small orifice.....To wat height h will de water spurt?? In centimetres take g=9.8 m/s

The answer is 20.

As the orifice is smaalll......you can take de fluid to be as a point sized particle from de definition of velocity of efflux......

Let de spurt velocity be u=(2gh)^.5 Nw as de particle movess frm a height to level h0 V^2 - u^2 = 2g(h0+h1).......h1 is de height frm tube to de water surface.......and h1<<<h0 => {(v^2)/2g} - h0 = h Substituting de values of v,g,h we get h0=19.886≈20

You should have mentioned to correct it upto nearest integer!!

you can do it easily with conservation of energy.and obviously you should mention to correct it upto nearest integer.cause everybody found the answer 19.88
