A new Ruler

Probability Level pending

A foot ruler is very 'wasteful' as there is twelve different ways of measuring 1 inch directly, 11 different ways of measuring 2 inches directly etc. What is the smallest number of marks you need to make in order to be able to measure directly each whole number from 1 to 12. (Assuming the ruler is exactly 1 foot so the ends can be used as 'invisible marks')

The answer is 4.
