A Pentagon and a Square Walk Into a Bar

Geometry Level 2

A B C D E ABCDE is a regular pentagon. On the outside of A B AB , we construct a square A B F G ABFG . What is the measure (in degrees) of E A G \angle EAG ?

Details and assumptions

The measure of an angle is given as a value from 0 0^\circ to 18 0 180^\circ .

The answer is 162.

From the regular pentagon, we have E A B = 3 × 18 0 5 = 10 8 \angle EAB = \frac {3 \times 180^\circ }{5} = 108 ^\circ . From the square, we have B A G = 9 0 \angle BAG = 90^\circ . Since angles at a point add up to 36 0 360^\circ , we obtain

E A G = 36 0 10 8 9 0 = 16 2 . \angle EAG = 360^\circ - 108^\circ - 90^\circ = 162 ^\circ.
