Random Number

You are playing a game with two other people where a random number is written on a piece of paper and the players try and guess what it is. The person that picks the number furthest from the answer loses and the other two win. If it's a draw, everyone wins. Suppose that the two people have picked their numbers as follows: Person A : 51 , Person B : 53. \text{Person A}: 51, \quad \text{Person B}: 53. What should you say to maximize your chances of winning?

100 50 1 52

Two people win, and only one loses. The trick is not to lose. And you will not lose if picking 52.

The actual number may be below that, in which case 53 will be the loser. Or the number may be above, then 51 will lose. Or it may be 52, resulting in a draw between the other two players, and a win for all.

The number nearest to 51 51 and 53 53 is 52 52 .
