Let x x be the number of years ago when Sally’s mother was three times her age. we have

m x = 3 ( s x ) m-x=3(s-x)

Substitute.

80 x = 3 ( 54 x ) 80-x=3(54-x)

80 x = 162 3 x 80-x=162-3x

2 x = 82 2x=82

x = 41 x=41
