a is the first letter so a+a+a+a=1+1+1+1=4 d is the fourth letter. now d+d+d=4+4+4=12 and l is the 12th letter.

You should have specified that you were saying the order of the alphabet's letters corresponded to the amount of each letter's value , otherwise 'd+d+d' could equal ′ ∞ ′ '\infty'
