A shoemaker can finish a designer shoe in 5 days if he works alone. With his assistant he can finish it in 3 days. For a special order bride's shoe, he starts working with his assistant. They work together for a day and then his assistant falls sick. Now the shoemaker has to finish the work alone. How many days will he take to finish it?

The answer is 3.33.

When the assistant falls ill, the work is 1/3 of the way done. Because only 2/3 of the normal amount of work needs to be done, the time needed to finish is 2/3 * 5 = 3 1/3 days.
