y 2 4 y 8 = 5 y + 28 y^2-4y-8=5y+28

y 2 9 y 36 = 0 y^2-9y-36=0

Using the quadratic formula

y = b ± b 2 4 a c 2 a = 9 ± 81 4 ( 36 ) 2 = 9 2 + 15 2 = 24 2 = 12 y=\dfrac{-b \pm\sqrt{b^2-4ac}}{2a}=\dfrac{9\pm\sqrt{81-4(-36)}}{2}=\dfrac{9}{2}+\dfrac{15}{2}=\dfrac{24}{2}=\boxed{12}
