A Problem from my book 6

In cold regions, the temperature of the surrounding is 2 0 C -20^\circ C . The water of the lake starts freezing and freeze up to a maximum depth.Find the maximum depth of ice sheet in meters formed. If the height of lake before freezing was 19 m 19 \text{ m} .

You are given that:

  • ρ ice ρ water = 0.9 \dfrac{\rho_{\text{ice}} }{\rho_{\text{water}}} = 0.9 .

  • K water K ice = 5 \dfrac{K_{\text{water}} }{K_{\text{ice}}} = 5 .

  • Maximum density of water is at 4 C 4^\circ C .

Where K K is the thermal conductivity of substance.

The answer is 10.

nice one

-we know that at the ice water junction the temperature is 0 degree C

-we also know that frezzing tends to stop or maximum thickness is when steady state is achived

  • water of maximum density is at the sea bed

so now just apply the condition of steady state.
