Let the number of horses be e e and the number of people be p p .

We have e + p = 74 e + p = 74 (Equation 1 1 )

and 4 e + 2 p = 196 4e + 2p = 196 (Equation 2 2 )

Solving simultaneously: ( 2 ) 2 ( 1 ) (2) - 2*(1) gives

2 e = 48 2e = 48

e = 24 e=24

24 + p = 74 24 + p = 74

p = 50 p = 50
