Algebra Level 2

In 1932 Sonu's age was equal to the last two digits of his birth year. Again, the same was true for his grandfather. What was the age of his grandfather?

Note - Grandfather wasn't born in the same century, he's not so young.


The answer is 66.

Sonu's grandfather's age can be written as 10 a + b 10a+b .

We can set up an equation like this with the given information, 10 a + b = 1932 − ( 1800 + 10 a + b ) 10a+b=1932-(1800+10a+b) 2 ( 10 a + b ) = 132 2(10a+b)=132 10 a + b = 66 10a+b=66

Therefore, the age of Sonu's grandfather is 66 \boxed{66}

Is it possible to use another variable as 10 a + b 10a+b ? This expression is never separated in your answer.

You may use any variable really, it doesn't matter.
