Let ann's current age = x

So from question : x -12 = 24 - x => 2x = 36 => x = 36/2 = 18

So ans: 18

Ben's Age = 24
Let Ann's age = x

24 - x = x - (x/2)
48 - 2x = 2x - x
3x = 48
x = 16

Joram, the answer is 18. With these kind of age questions, you have to be very careful in phrasing the English, which is one reason why I don't particularly like such questions.

Let's verify that Ann is 18 satisfies the condition. Ben is now 24 years old. When Ben was as old as Ann is now, that was 24-18 = 6 years ago. Ann would have been 18=6=12 years old then (when Ben was as old as Ann is now). Hence, it is true that Ben is twice as old as Ann was (when Ben was as old as Ann is now).

Please read the ques again. Your "(x/2)" refers to (24/2) = 12. So correct ans is: 18

When Ben was 18, then ann was 12. That doesn't justify the condition that Ben was twice as old as ann.

Your answer is correct .

The answer is 16. Ben is 24. Ann is 16 now. When Ben was 16, Ann was 8 and Ben is twice as old as Ann.
