Let the father's age be x and the son's age be y

So, x+y/2=20

or x+y=40.........................(I)

also, x+10=3(y+10)

That gives us , x-3y=20......................(ii)

Solving these 2 equations we get y=5

I can't understand how u formed these equations. .?

Average of the ages of the father and the son is given by (x+y)/2=20, where x and y are mensioned above. After 10 yrs, father's and the son's age would be x+10 and y+10 respectively, So three times the age of the son (after 10 yrs): 3(y+10) is equal father's age (after 10 yrs) : x+10.
