Let's say you are the head of a linguistic society and wish to arrange words formed by using all the letters of the word "LATE"......IN DICTIONARY ORDER THAT IS ALPHABETICALLY ..........

now in which position does the word "LATE" occurs?

There are 4 distinct letters- means there are 4! ways of making a single 4-letter word with 4 letters. Alphabetically, L-A-T-E comes after all the words that begin with A and E, or after a total of 3! + 3! words. 3!+3!=12. There is only one word that is before LATE and that is LAET, th 13th word alphabetically. Hence, LATE is the 14th word arrange alphabetically.
