The discriminant of a quadratic equation is always

b 2 4 a c {{ b }^{ 2 }-4ac }

In this case this would be

3 2 4 ( 1 ) ( 8 ) { 3 }^{ 2 }-4(1)(8) .

or - 23. The solutions to any quadratic equation would be

b ± b 2 4 a c 2 2 a \frac { -b\pm \sqrt [ 2 ]{ { b }^{ 2 }-4ac } }{ 2a }

The discriminant is the part that is under the radical sign. Note that the discriminant does not include the radical sign
