4 solutions

we can only add and subtract proper fractions if they have equal denominators, if the denominators are unequal we need to find the LCM. in this problem the LCM is 80.

3 8 1 5 = \frac{3}{8}-\frac{1}{5}= 5 ( 3 ) 8 ( 1 ) 40 = \frac{5(3)-8(1)}{40}= 15 8 40 = \frac{15-8}{40}= 7 40 \frac{7}{40}

yep you got it ! :)

3 8 \frac{3}{8} - 1 5 \frac{1}{5}

= 15 8 40 \frac{15-8}{40}

= 7 40 \frac{7}{40}

3/8 - 1/5 = 15/40 - 8/40 = 7/40

\[\begin{align} &= \dfrac{(5)3}{(5)8} - \dfrac{(8)1}{(8)5} \\ \\ &= \dfrac{15 - 8}{5 \times 8} \\ \\ &= \boxed{\dfrac{7}{40}}

\end{align}\]
