a + b a+ b = 4 4 .........................(1)

a b a-b = 2 2 .........................(2)

so, 2 a 2a = 6 6 ......................................[(1)+(2)]

or, a a = 3 3 , so , b b = 1 1 and a b ab = 3 × 1 3 \times 1 = 1 1

(a-b)^2=(a+b)^2-4ab

Therefore,2^2=4^2-4ab

4ab=12

Therefore, ab=3

a b = ( a + b 2 ) 2 ( a b 2 ) 2 = ( 4 2 ) 2 ( 2 2 ) 2 = 2 2 1 2 = 3 \begin{aligned}ab&=\left( \frac{a+b}{2}\right)^2-\left(\frac{a-b}{2}\right)^2\\&=\left(\frac{4}{2}\right)^2-\left(\frac{2}{2}\right)^2\\&=2^2-1^2\\&=\boxed{3}\end{aligned}
