a = b a=b Step 1: Multiply both sides by a a a 2 = a b a^2 = ab Step 2: Subtract both sides by b 2 b^2 a 2 b 2 = a b b 2 a^2 - b^2 = ab - b^2 Step 3: Factorize. ( a b ) ( a + b ) = b ( a b ) (a-b)(a+b) = b(a-b) Step 4 : Cancel ( a b ) (a-b) from both sides. a + b = b a+b = b Step 5:Subtract b b from both sides a = 0 a=0 a n y n u m b e r = 0 \therefore any \ number = 0
