eg, the speed upstream = x and the speed downstream = y

(20/x) + (16/y) = 7

(8/x) + (32/y) = 6

elemination y, so : 32/x = 8

x = 4

(20/4) + (16/y) = 7

5 + (16/y) = 7

16/y = 2

y = 8

the speed of the boat in still water is mean x and y = (4+8)/2 = 6 km/hr
