Alien Rat Breakout

Algebra Level pending

Mandy had a 4 cornered cottage in his backyard. He has persistently had rats ruin all the food, clothing etc in his house. One day he decides to kill them and chases all of them into the the cottage.

All the rats gather in the first corner. He kills few of them with a spade.

The remaining rats run to the second corner and get doubled. He runs to the second corner of the cottage and kills the same number of rats he did in first corner.

The remaining rats run to the third corner and get tripled. Furious, he runs to third corner and again kills the same number of rats as he did in the first or the second corners.

The remaining mischief of rats run to the fourth corner and get quadrupled. Mandy, furiously runs to the fourth corner and kills the same number as he did in the first, second or third corner. Now all the rats are dead.

Q1. How many rats were actually there?

Q2: How many did Mandy kill in the corners (Each corner he killed same number)?

Answers should be posted in Q1.Q2 format. Example: 234.76 (Actually there.Number killed)

The answer is 41.24.

Let there are total y rats and munna killed x rats in every corner So,in first corner remaining rats are y-x in second corner remaining rats are 2y-3x in third,6y-10x in fourth,24y-41x now all the rats are killed so 24y-41x=0 hence y/x=41/24 which conclude that total no of rats are 41 and he killed 24 in each corner so total killed is 24*4=96

X= number of rats, y= rats he killed with spade

corner 1: x-y corner 2:2 (x-y)-y=2x-3y corner 3:3 (2x-3y)-y=6x-10y corner 4: 4*(6x-10y)-y=0 ( none leftover) 24x-41y=0 =>x/y=41/24
Rats=41 and the number he kills each corner is 24.
