The addition, subtraction, multiplication and division between two numbers, X and Y, can be represented by positive integers from 1 to 16, both inclusive, but each positive integer can only be used once.
However, you don't know what X and Y are.
Here is an example, 1 and 10, to help you understand better.
Addition: 11
Subtraction: 9, -9
Multiplication: 10
Division: 10, 0.1
Notice that 10 is repeated twice in this example, so this is not accepted. The numbers between the stars show alternate but incorrect solutions that are avoided.
