Bronze. Though bronze is generally harder than wrought iron, the Bronze Age gave way to the Iron Age. This happened because iron was easier to find and easier to process.

How do you like to give comment onto Chromium for being hardest metal instead of alloy?

The hardest metal is indeed chromium.Actually, hardness is determined by the resistance of the material to be scratched . The hardest material is diamond, then comes corundum etc. This hardness is measured on Mohs scale.

There are only two ancient alloys in the list electrum (which is also naturally occurring) and bronze. Electrum has gold as a base metal and as most gold alloys it is soft. Therefore, the hardest ancient alloy is bronze \boxed{\text{bronze}} .
