It's dark, I have 30 socks all loose and not in pairs, 6 red, 4 blue, 10 orange, 8 black and 2 yellow in my drawer.

how many socks must I grab to guarantee a pair?

the least possibility is 5 to get all the different colors the next grab will certainly make a pair all in all = 6

There are only 5 types of socks.The worst-case scenario is that you will pick all 5 types in 5 picks so you the 6th will guarantee that you have picked a pair.
