Instead of performing tedious calculation which can take away from your time, simply round the numbers to begin with. 1.98 1.98 rounds up to 2 2 , 5.04 5.04 rounds down to 5 5 , and 9.89 9.89 rounds up to 10 10 . Thus, when calculating the total amount in dollars, you simply calculate 2 + 5 + 10 = 2+5+10= 17 \boxed{ 17}

Adding on with Aneesh, when rounded, the decimal place has to be above n.75, or there is an exceptionally high number. For example, 4.6 plus 4.6 equals 9.2, and 4.6 (when rounded) equals 5. So it equals 10. But when you round 9.2, it would equal 9.

$1.98+$5.04+$9.89=$16.91 When rounded off, we get- $17.
