Use the simplest example of the polynomials to get the answer.

Let f ( x ) = p x m 1 f(x) = px^{m-1} and g ( x ) = q x m 1 g(x) = qx^{m-1} , where p p and q q are constants.

f ( x ) g ( x ) = p x m 1 ( q x m 1 ) = p q ( x m 1 ) 2 = p q x 2 ( m 1 ) = p q x 2 m 2 f(x)g(x) = px^{m-1}(qx^{m-1})=pq(x^{m-1})^2 = pqx^{2(m-1)} = pqx^{2m-2}

a = 2 m 2 a=\boxed{2m-2}

Take the example!!, If two polynomials, are of degree 3 = 4 1 3 = 4-1 then their multiplication is polynomial of degree 6 = 2 × 4 2 6 = 2\times 4 - 2
