To find for the sum of the coefficients, substitute 1 for each variable, then simplify
( 2 0 1 7 x − 2 0 1 6 y ) 2 0 1 7
= [ ( 2 0 1 7 ) ( 1 ) − ( 2 0 1 6 ) ( 1 ) ] 2 0 1 7
= ( 2 0 1 7 − 2 0 1 6 ) 2 0 1 7
= 1 2 0 1 7
= 1
