Let S S be the sum of all elements of the sequence. Then S n = m \frac{S}{n} = m . Adding two new elements, one with a value of zero and another with a value of m will give us a sum of (S + m) for a total of (n + 2) terms. We know that S = m n S = mn , thus the new mean S = S + m n + 2 = m n + m n + 2 = m ( n + 1 ) n + 2 S' = \frac{S + m}{n + 2} = \frac{mn + m}{n + 2} = \frac{m(n + 1)}{n + 2}
