Say the student chose a number x x

2 x 138 = 102 2 x = 240 x = 120 2x-138=102\\ 2x=240\\ x=\boxed{120}

Let x be the number he chose, then 2⋅x−138=1022⋅x−138=102 2x=2402x=240 x=120
