Jones received $25 more than Smith.

at first , subtracting the extra money, (350 -25) =$ 325

so, $325 will be equally divided between them.

so, Smith will get = 325 2 \frac {325}{2} = 162.5 $

Relevant wiki: Setting Up Equations

Let x x be the number of dollars which Smith receives. Then, Jones receives ( x + 25 x+25 ) dollars, so

x + ( x + 25 ) = 350 x+(x+25)=350 \implies x + x + 25 = 350 x+x+25=350 \implies 2 x = 350 25 2x=350-25 \implies 2 x = 325 2x=325 \implies x = x= 162.5 \color{#D61F06}\boxed{162.5}
