The fish has a head 9" long, the tail is equal to the size of the head plus one-half the body, the body is the size of the head plus the tail. How long is the fish?

T = tail of the fish B= body of the fish head = 9''

Solution . . . .

T = 9 + B/2 B = 9 + T

Substitute the top one into the bottom:

B = 9 + 9 + B/2 B/2 = 18 B = 36

Substitute that into the bottom equation:

36 = 9 + T T = 18

So we have the:

head + body + tail = 9 + 36 + 18 = 72"
