PEMDAS Rule

this was pretty easy if you follow the rules of pemdas

Darnell Moran - 7 months, 2 weeks ago

what is PEDMAS rule Sheila palagtiw??

samarth sangam - 6 years, 9 months ago

PEMDAS stands for Parenthesis, Exponents, Multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction. With this problem, you would do the multiplication first, so it would be 3+5-9, and now you just do the problem.

But division has higher authority than multiplication hence you need to divide then multiple if asked in the equation

Milan Soni - 5 years, 7 months ago

Hi I'm in UK an we use bidmas. It stands for brackets indecies division multiplication addition subtraction

Hi Katharine, I seem to recall it was BODMAS. Brackets, Orders, Div, Mult, Add, Sub.

Ian Turnbull - 5 years, 2 months ago

I think it should be pedmas......

Division and multiplication are done together and addition and subtraction are done together It is done this way P E MD (together) AS(together) So it doesn't matter whether pemdas or pedmas

Kapu Rkk - 4 years, 4 months ago

Pemdas,a.ka. order of operations....parentheses,exponents,multiplication, division addition and thensubtraction.

Tamra Armstrong - 5 years, 9 months ago

Cant use PEMDAS without the ( ) with numbers

Yes you can bc multiplication still comes before addition

Darren Cronover - 5 years, 11 months ago

We use BODMAS - bracket of division multiplication addition subtraction and can use even if there is no bracket...

Shruti Shukla - 5 years, 10 months ago

Or BIDMAS -- brackets, indices, division, multiplication, addition and subtraction.

Julian Chan - 5 years, 10 months ago

Problem though is that it asks for the sum not the solution? The sum restricts exclusively to the addition which in this case its 3+0

first work multiply 0*5=0 after add and subtract..

according to the rule of "BODMAS" multiplication should be done first followed by addition and subtraction .....so therefore first 0*5=0;then 3+0+5=8;then 8-9=-1 and thats it !!! "-1"

ive been used MDAS rule(multiply, divide, add & subtract )

according to BODMAS we first multiply 0 x 5=0, then add 3 + 0 +5=8 ,then subtract 8 - 9= -1

This is like one of those Facebook posts that make me cringe.

By using BODMAS rule BRACKET OF DIVISON MULTIPLICATION ADDITION SUBTRACT So, here 0×5 becomes 0 So, 8-9= -1

by the formula of bodmas ans will be -1

-1 according to bodmas first divide then multiply nd then plus so simple 0*5 =0 nd then 3+0+5=8 nd 8-9 = -1

Imagine the horror people might have felt if they could not answer this elementary question! Simple math may look easy but it can be hard for some people. But I still got it correct.

we start with 5*0=0 Hence , we have 3+0+5-9 = -1

why we should start with 5*0 first ?

As many people have said 'use BODMAS to get -1'. The puzzle for me is that I cannot even do it wrong and get any of the other answers that are given. Even if you incorrectly didn't use BODMAS and first of all added 3 to 0 to get 3, and then multiply that to get 15 the completed (incorrect) answer would be +11. And this is not one of the possible answers, Regards, David

Ronnie Slowinski

The question is wrong, you cannot use Bidmas (or Pedmas if you are American) because there are no brackets, for example, you can interpret the question as: 3 + (0x5) + 5 - 9

Or as: (3 + 0)x5 +5 - 9

Or even as: 3 +0(5 + 5 - 9)

Or in a thousand different ways, Bidmas only works if the question is written out properly which this is not.

What if 0x5 is meant as a hexadezimal number (5), like in some programming languages? Then the answer would be 4

3 + 0 + 5 - 9 = 8 - 9 = -1

the rule of math is first of all Divide then Multiply then Add and in the last Subtract According to this 0*5=0 then 3+0+5=8 and then 8-9=-1
