An electricity and magnetism problem by Md Muttahirul Islam

Each of two small ball mass of 1 gram has hung from the same point by silk yarn length of 80 cm. The balls have same charge and for anti-attraction the distance between them is 4 cm. Find the charge of each ball in 1 decimal place?

The answer is 6.6E-9.

1 solution

let, the anti-attraction force of two ball is F and yarn's force is T.

We know, F = 9 x 10^9 x q^2/r^2

by the picture,it can be told..

F = T sin θ \sin \theta .......1

mg = T cos θ \cos \theta ......2

1 divided by 2,

F m g \frac{F}{mg} = tan θ \tan \theta

or, 9 x 10^9 x q^2/r^2 = mg tan θ \tan \theta

so, q = m g tan θ r 2 4 π ϵ 0 \sqrt{mg \tan \theta r^2 4 \pi \epsilon_{0}}

   = 6.6E-9
