An electricity and magnetism problem by Soumyadip Bijuli

A point charge q q is placed at a distance of 2 r 2r from the centre O O of a conducting charged sphere of radius r r . Due to the induced charges on the sphere, find the electric potential at a point P P on the surface of sphere

Take K q r = 18 Volts \dfrac{Kq}r = 18 \text{ Volts} .

The answer is 3.

First consider potential at O Here due to charge q potential is kq/2r=18 To maintain the neutrality of sphere. -q will get induced on the part Of sphere near the charge and q will get induced in the opposite part. But as all induced charges on sphere are equidistant from centre their potential will get summed to 0. Now as this is a conducting sphere pot at 0=pot at P. Not pot at P=pot due to induced charges+ kq/3r Hence we get kq/2r=pot induced+kq/3r ie. 9=pot induced +6 Hence potential at P due to induced charges is 3
