40% of X plus 42 = X .4X + 42 = x 42 = .6X X = 70

If adding 40% of the number to 42 will result in obtaining it, then 42 would be equal to 60% of the original value. Thus putting 60% of x=42, through which we get the answer 70.Which can later be verified by substituting it into the question.
